FROM PAST TO PRESENT

THE HISTORY OF BROUWER

An historic event took place on 14 June 1918: the Zuiderzee Act was signed, with the reclamation of the Zuiderzee as its goal. On 28 May 1932, the last gap in the Afsluitdijk dam was closed. The Zuiderzee was renamed the IJsselmeer, with the salt water slowly becoming fresh.

As a result of the closure of the Zuiderzee, fishermen from Urk were forced to divert to the North Sea and land their catches in ports along the North Sea coast, such as IJmuiden, Vlissingen and Scheveningen, and even in Belgian ports such as Breskens and Ostend. In Urk, they lifted their chins and accepted the challenge of the hard work ahead. Op Urk rechtten men de rug en werd de uitdaging van het harde werk dat voor ons lag aangenomen.

1960 -1995

Jurie Brouwer obtained his heavy goods vehicle licence and, after his military service, worked for a while in his brother Frans’ liquor store, where he also worked as a truck driver. The first lorry he ever owned was a secondhand Bedford, which he bought around 1960.

During the day he drove for the farmers in the polder, and tinkered until late at night to keep the lorry running. In 1962, the first North Sea fish were sold at the Urk fish auction. As many as 412 loads of fish were recorded that year. In the years that followed, the Urk fish auction grew into one of the largest and most modern fish auctions in Europe. Jurie switched to transporting fresh fish from North Sea ports to the fish auction in Urk. The fresh fish were dumped from the ship into wooden crates packed with ice, which were then stacked in a flatbed lorry. A tarp was stretched over the crates, after which the journey to Urk began. As well as the liquor store, Jurie’s brother Frans owned a café called Havenzicht. Since the manager couldn’t keep the café running properly, Frans turned to his sister-in-law Grietje Brouwer-Hoekman, Jurie’s wife, and asked her to run the café for about six years. Grietje, already a mother of five children and expecting her sixth, had no issues with this request; she could use the extra money. Although Jurie Brouwer was initially unhappy with the news, Grietje continued managing the café. She ended up behind the bar, which was a great success. As well as running the café, she had three more children, bringing the total to nine. With the money earned from both transporting fish and the Havenzicht café, Jurie bought his first brand-new DAF truck. The Urk fleet, fish auction and fish trade grew. Brouwer Transport grew along with it.

1995 – 2021

In 1995, son Jakob Brouwer took the wheel. By then, the fishing industry was in dire straits due to European regulations, and the transport of fresh fish was declining. The company changed course from fresh fish to transporting frozen goods. In particular, Brouwer focused on the international distribution of frozen fish to Germany and the UK.

2021 - today

In 2021, nephew Bram Vlot took charge. Together with Kotra Transport from Yerseke, which took a stake in Brouwer Transport, the company grew to 25 trucks and 40 trailer units. Brouwer now serves Germany, Austria and the UK several times a week. Thanks to Kotra’s strong network, we have been able to add many other European countries. We have also established reliable partner relationships to cover all other European countries.
